ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani anti-terrorism court this week turned down the interim bail request of former prime minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, in a dozen cases related to the May 9 riots last year, local media widely reported.
Khan’s brief arrest on May 9 last year triggered angry protests in many parts of the country, where thousands of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party supporters took to the streets and according to law enforcers, attacked government buildings and military installations. During the attacks, the residence of a senior military commander in Lahore was also targeted.
The government launched a nationwide crackdown against PTI leaders and supporters in the aftermath of the protests, accusing Khan of inciting his supporters to violent protests. Many leaders publicly parted ways with Khan following the crackdown while others went into hiding. Many were also arrested and booked under various charges of rioting related to the protests while other PTI supporters were tried by military courts.
Bibi was seeking interim bail for complaints registered against her in various police stations across Rawalpindi, English-language daily Dawn reported.
“An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of Rawalpindi on Monday rejected petitions seeking post-arrest bail of Bushra Bibi, wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, in 12 cases registered in connection with violent protests of May 9, 2023,” Dawn said.
The newspaper said the ATC judge, Malik Ejaz Asif, directed police to conclude the investigation in the cases within a week and adjourned proceedings till August 22.
Khan, arguably Pakistan’s most popular politician, has been in jail since August last year. All four convictions handed down to him ahead of a parliamentary election in February have either been suspended or overturned.
After being acquitted on the last of those four convictions, authorities rearrested Khan and Bibi in July on charges of selling state gifts unlawfully in an old corruption case. Khan denies all the accusations and says they are politically motivated to keep him and his party away from power.
