LAHORE: Grammy award winning musician and song writer Katy Perry has been appointed ambassador for one of the United Kingdom’s leading charities for India and Pakistan, the British Asian Trust’s Children’s Protection Fund for South Asia.
Perry was announced as the new face of the charity by Prince Charles who personally funds the trust which goes toward financing projects in greater South Asia, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The announcement was made at an event hosted by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall at the British Asian Trust’s annual dinner, which saw attendees like the High Commissioner for Pakistan Nafees Zakaria and High Commissioner for Bangladesh Saida Muna Tasneem and senior cabinet members from the United Kingdom
Perry has had a history with South Asia, expressing in her speech at the event a love for India where she got married to her ex-partner British comedian Russell Brand in October 2010.
Perry who also serves as a UNICEF Global Ambassador spoke of her last time in India and how her plans of joining the Trust’s mission was to tackle rampant child trafficking in the region.
“I was able to meet with The Prince of Wales and other leaders in Mumbai, and I was impressed by their strong plan — from on-ground initiatives to fundraising — that will aim to cut child trafficking in half,” said Perry at the event. “I am especially honored to be named an ambassador for the British Asian Trust’s Children’s Protection Fund, and to help shine my light on the work that the British Asian Trust will be doing in South Asia, and to be a part of finding solutions to child trafficking.”
The announcement has been met with some backlash with many taking to social media to express their confusion at an American celebrity, not of Asian descent, being chosen for the position over Britishers of South Asian descent, such as Riz Ahmed, Jameela Jamil or Tan France.
However, Perry is joining a line-up of South Asian ambassadors with wide and diverse platforms including Pakistani actor Sanam Saeed, Pakistani cricketer Azhar Mahmood and national football star from Pakistan Hajjra Khan.
