A paw-fect place for dogs in Jeddah

  • Kingdom’s canine lovers rejoice with opening of Paws Society grooming, daycare center

JEDDAH: Saudi national Noha Abdulwahid returned to the Kingdom with the goal of starting a dog society in Jeddah after spending eight years living in Orange County, California, US.

As a hub for dog owners, the Paws Society is a dog cafe where people can bring their dogs to play as well as meet other owners. The Paws Society offers daycare, supplies like food, sand and accessories, grooming services for both dogs and cats, as well as delicious coffee and treats.

“During my time abroad, I have learned and witnessed how each county has a distinctive community, and the entire society supports each community to have the highest possible quality of life,” Abdulwahid told Arab News.

She added: “For instance, one of the stories that amazed me was when there was a fire in a park near the city and a dog rescue center was close by and realized it was unsafe for dogs to stay there, so the manager of the rescue center posted a message on social media asking for help by fostering the dogs until things calmed down. For two hours, the entire center was abandoned. I was astounded and shocked by the community’s resilience.”

When Abdulwahid came back to the Kingdom during the COVID-19 pandemic, she used to stroll around her neighborhood and noticed many people walking their dogs, sparking the idea of building a special canine center for the community.

It occurred to me to start a society for dogs so we can join and share our enthusiasm, expertise and care for animals.

Noha Abdulwahid, Paws Society founder

“The heat is terrible during the summer for dogs and owners, and there are no gated parks for dogs and most public parks do not allow them. It occurred to me to start a society for dogs so we can join and share our enthusiasm, expertise and care for animals. I really thank my husband, who greatly assisted me in turning it from a concept into a real business,” she said.

Her dream was to create a community, not just another supplies shop, so she designed the location to be pet friendly with a big space in the middle containing toys, a playground and lots of seating space.

Abdulwahid ensures that all her employees are friendly and love dogs, and they check each dog that comes in just to make sure they are healthy before letting them play.

“Our society is a very friendly, welcoming, supportive and caring society. Every employee works with passion and love for what they do. Our society members are also very kind and welcoming towards new visitors. I’m sure you’ll feel love in the air by opening our door.”

To give back to society and due to high demand and interest, the Paws Society holds numerous adoption events for dogs in the shelter.

They also host many fun activities and costume parties for dogs, as well as events for Eid holidays.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Paws Society offers daycare services, supplies and accessories, and grooming services for both dogs and cats.

• Founder Noha Abdulwahid opened Paws Society after noticing the need for a hub for dog lovers and owners in Jeddah.

• The pet friendly community space includes a playground and toys for the furry friends, plenty of seating, and delicious treats and coffee for visitors.

Jumana Nabeel, a frequent visitor who brings her poodle twice a week, said: “It’s close to my house and a place where you can meet others who have similar hobbies to mine. Their prices in grooming are higher than other places but the products they use are much better because the smell lasts for a long time.”

She added: “The owner is so devoted to dogs that she was the one who bathed my dog. Their drinks are top-notch, plus they have a patio.

“They offer a grooming service, two halls — one for large dogs and one for tiny dogs — as well as a variety of toys and food items. They pay special attention to the small details when it comes to the room and the furniture placement.”

How a cutting-edge AI model developed in Saudi Arabia is reshaping medical diagnostics

  • MiniGPT-Med is transforming diagnostics by enhancing accuracy and efficiency in disease detection
  • Developed by KAUST and SDAIA, it leverages advanced vision-interfaced technology to interpret medical scans

RIYADH: Artificial intelligence in healthcare is revolutionizing medical diagnostics, from streamlining patient care to enhancing the speed and accuracy of disease detection.

Saudi Arabia is at the forefront of this revolution with the development of an innovative AI model called MiniGPT-Med, which promises to reshape how medical professionals approach diagnostics.

With the ability to analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns that might be missed by the human eye, AI is fast becoming an indispensable healthcare tool.

Whether detecting early signs of diseases, interpreting medical scans or helping plan treatment, AI’s role in medicine is expanding rapidly, reducing costs and improving patient outcomes.

Enter MiniGPT-Med, a cutting-edge, vision-interfaced AI model developed in Saudi Arabia by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority.

Launched in July, this advanced tool is designed to enhance the accuracy of medical diagnostics by integrating image analysis with textual clinical data, significantly improving the detection of conditions such as pneumonia, edema, brain tumors and lung cancer.

“MiniGPT-Med aids doctors by improving diagnostic accuracy through integrated processing of both image and textual clinical data,” Mohamed Elhoseiny, assistant professor of computer science at the Visual Computing Center at KAUST, told Arab News.

“It can be thought of as giving a large language model medical eyesight by carefully integrating vision into the language model and preparing the necessary data to learn these skills, including the localization of issues in medical images.”

MiniGPT-Med builds on the existing architecture of large language models — or LLMs — like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which have already demonstrated exceptional medical knowledge.

One of the key features that sets MiniGPT-Med apart from other AI models is its ability to localize abnormalities within medical images.

Doctors interact with it using simple, predefined queries such as “Could you describe the contents of this image for me?” or “Where is the abnormality?”

The AI then provides immediate, accurate results, such as identifying pneumonia in a chest X-ray or pinpointing the exact region of a brain tumor in an MRI scan.

In initial trials, it has already surpassed the accuracy of previous models by as much as 19 percent.

Trained on diverse medical datasets, MiniGPT-Med leverages millions of cases to back up its diagnoses, drawing reasoned conclusions by comparing images to similar cases in its database.

DID YOUKNOW?

• MiniGPT-Med enhances diagnostic accuracy by integrating image analysis with clinical data.

The AI model identifies diseases such as pneumonia, edema, brain tumors, and lung cancer.

• It localizes abnormalities in medical images, helping doctors to make precise diagnoses.

• Developed by KAUST and SDAIA, it is part of Saudi Arabia’s drive to lead in AI healthcare.

The model sources its information from five comprehensive medical datasets, including MIMIC-CXR (chest X-ray images and reports), NLST (low-dose CT scans for lung cancer detection), SLAKE (radiology images), RSNA (pneumonia detection), and RadVQA (radiology images).

Despite its accuracy, Elhoseiny is keen to emphasize that MiniGPT-Med is designed to complement, not replace, healthcare professionals.

“The new diagnostics method introduced by models like MiniGPT-Med aims to assist, not replace, physicians and radiologists, enabling them to do more with less,” he said.

Instead, by enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, the AI tool is intended to help doctors deliver better care, especially in under-resourced areas.

Looking to the future, the development team at KAUST and SDAIA plans to incorporate more diverse datasets, improve the model’s understanding of complex medical terminology, and enhance its reliability.

Extensive clinical validation studies are also planned to ensure that MiniGPT-Med is safe and effective in real world healthcare environments.

The collaboration between KAUST and SDAIA represents a significant step forward in the application of AI in healthcare.

Elhoseiny says the partnership is aligned with the broader goals of the new GenAI Center of Excellence at KAUST, where further innovations in AI are expected to emerge.

With technologies like MiniGPT-Med, Saudi Arabia is not only advancing its healthcare capabilities but also positioning itself as a leader in the global AI landscape.

As these technologies continue to evolve, they hold the promise of transforming healthcare practices worldwide, offering hope for more accurate diagnoses and better patient outcomes.

Saudi father’s simple post on social media goes viral

  • Abdulkarim Al-Kazraj’s photos with his daughter speak to netizens on supporting children’s individuality

RIYADH: In a world where social media often magnifies negativity and fleeting trends, one Saudi father’s heartfelt post has become a beacon of positivity and a catalyst for deep discussions about the role of parents in their children’s lives.

Abdulkarim Al-Kazraj, a respected author and passionate advocate for social and cultural issues, recently took to X to share a poignant moment from his family’s life.

What began as a simple post to mark his daughter Laura’s first day of middle school quickly went viral, capturing the hearts of thousands and sparking meaningful conversations across the nation.

Al-Kazraj’s post featured a side-by-side photo comparison of Laura on her first day of school in 2018 and her first day of middle school in 2024.

The image was a touching reminder of how quickly time passes and how children grow up before their parents’ eyes. For Al-Kazraj, this was a personal keepsake — a way to document a significant milestone in his daughter’s life. But the post resonated with a much larger audience, amassing thousands of likes, comments, and shares, and becoming a trending topic on X.

The widespread reaction to Al-Kazraj’s post took him by surprise. As someone who has always valued documenting life’s moments, he was no stranger to sharing his thoughts and experiences.

“Ever since I was young, I loved writing in my diary,” he explained. “With the advent of the internet, this evolved into writing on websites and forums. Then came the digital revolution, where social media made it easier for everyone, young and old, to share their daily lives and special occasions.”

However, even with his background in writing and sharing, Al-Kazraj did not anticipate the overwhelming response his post would receive.

“On the first day of the new school year, I captured some photos with my children to keep as memories. I posted them in the evening and then took a short nap. When I woke up two hours later, I found my phone flooded with notifications and messages!” he recounted, still astonished by the sheer volume of engagement.

The post, which many saw as a simple yet powerful reflection of a father’s love and pride in his daughter’s growth, quickly sparked conversations about the role of parents in supporting their children’s individuality and emotional well-being.

In a society where traditional expectations and cultural norms often dictate the relationship between parents and children, Al-Kazraj’s open and affectionate approach stood out.

“The post captured the fleeting passage of time and how our children grow up … in the blink of an eye. Yesterday’s children are today’s university students, doctors, and teachers,” he said.

For many who engaged with the post, Al-Kazraj’s documentation of his daughter’s growth was more than just a personal moment — it was a reminder of the universal experience of parenthood. The bittersweet realization that children grow up so quickly resonated deeply with other parents, who reflected on their own experiences and the importance of cherishing every moment.

But the post — which showed Laura sporting short hair — also struck a chord on a deeper level, particularly among women who used the platform to share their experiences with societal expectations and restrictions.

In Saudi Arabia, where cultural norms have traditionally placed significant emphasis on appearances and conformity, Al-Kazraj’s post became a rallying point for those advocating for more freedom and individuality, particularly for young girls.

“Among the thousands of comments were those who supported, those who criticized, and those who offered advice. But what caught my attention most were those who expressed relief — as if they had found an outlet through this post,” Al-Kazraj said. “Many young women spoke about the restrictions and lack of choice they faced, finding solace in this simple post.”

His post, while rooted in a personal moment, opened a dialogue about the broader issues of societal expectations, the importance of parental support, and the need for understanding in relationships between parents and children.

“In the end, all this fuss was about a haircut! But it seems to have touched many, sparking discussions in the comments about stories, adventures, and memories. What might seem trivial on the surface actually carries deep desires that, if addressed with understanding, will pass smoothly and quietly, without leaving any scars on childhood,” Al-Kazraj said.

In a society where parental authority has often been exercised with strict control, his decision to allow his daughter the freedom to choose her appearance was seen as both progressive and deeply loving, challenging traditional notions and highlighting the importance of dialogue.

Following the overwhelming response to his original post, which garnered nearly 16,000 likes, Al-Kazraj took to X once again to share a thoughtful follow-up.

He reposted his initial message with an insightful comment, stating: “This is not a justification but for the sake of clarity: I’ve received comments about my daughter’s haircut, and regardless of personal freedom and intrusion, you need to understand that life today is different from the past! Forcing and depriving can lead to adverse results. This is the age of experimentation and change. Hair will eventually grow back, but if something remains in her mind, it will never fade.”
